Sharks ( Lord of the deep)

My topic is basically about the relationship between shark and humans. and specifically about the sharks in our environment what is their importance, who is the victim in all attacks, with general information about this fish, historically and scientifically. sharks or ( as people would like to name it like, lord of deep, the threat ,,, etc) are fish, human faced sharks threats years ago, and they created such an image of a monster in all around the oceans. it became a real nightmare for many people specially swimmers, fishers and divers. However, the real truth is not that, we are not victims, and we will never be. we are the culprits against a lot of animals and fishes apart from pollutions, wars, forestation...etc, in our world. from this point, I am going to talk in my research paper about Numbers, Studies and facts around this issue. and my goal is to discuss how such an idea became a true fact in our mind and through many generations before us.

Sharks existed long before dinosaurs lived. Sharks are fish, not mammals like whales and dolphins are, but unlike most fish, sharks don’t have any bones. Instead, their skeletons are made of cartilage, which is not hard or brittle as bones. Another interesting fact about sharks is that they cannot swim backwards. Some kinds of sharks are only a few inches long, about the size of a person’s hand. Certain sharks, however, can grow to be bigger than a school bus! Some species, such as the great white shark, are well known through movies, books, television documentaries, etc. And are considered pretty scary by most people. Shark’s huge mouth and sharp, pointy teeth make them dangerous opponents. Fear, however, hasn’t stop people from hunting sharks. Many products are made from sharks, using their meet, skin, oil, teeth and jaws. Their fins are also considered a delicacy, and are served up in such dishes as shark’s fin soup. Fishermen have been known to cut of only the fins of sharks and then throw the rest back into the water to die. Many scientists agree that humans are greater threats to sharks than sharks are to humans.

The reasons I am so interested in this topic because basically this is my planet as well and I do care about it no matter what. and I feel a lot of things I can not change like, Global worming, Deforestation, Wars....etc However all these issues are unquestionably known as its definitions, but not sharks and their role in our life. their importance in our ecosystem. and how is the victim, and how the media played a big role by changing the truth image. People do have misunderstanding about Sharks. and I will express this in my research paper before the end of this semester.

Endangered Sharks (R.P)

Sharks have far more reason to fear humans than the other way around. Every year, people kill more than 100 million sharks (www.findarticle.com/p/), primarily as a result of huge industrial fishing operations that are devastating our oceans. Over fishing and "by catch" (accidental catch in fishing gear) are threatening the very existence of sharks in all our oceans. This fishing pressure is exacerbated by a growing demand for shark fins, skin (leather), meat, cartilage and oil that is driving ever-higher harvest levels for many large sharks, including Angel Sharks, Lemon Sharks, Blue Sharks, and gentle giants like the Whale and Basking sharks. Over hundreds of millions of years, these awesome creatures have evolved into the top predators in an array of marine environments and play an irreplaceable role in them. The huge numbers of sharks killed each year are especially alarming because many shark species grow and reproduce very slowly, making it difficult for populations to bounce back easily from large decline.

The reason for which the great white sharks are hunted is first, for the trade of their valuable jaws and the fins, which are popular for making appetizing soup, which fetch lot of money. The fins of the white sharks are amputated and the remaining body is dumped into the ocean. The fins are cut when the shark is alive and this represent one of the man’s cruel nature. Second is breeding, according to (www.Grayreef.noaa.gov) sharks have very slow reproduction rate and that’s mean they are facing huge risk by hunting them. Third reason is the increase of human population, which is dramatically, decreased the shark’s food. People nowadays using the sources unsustainably, and that means catching tons of fishes and shrimps, so what did we leave for the sharks to survive? We have to start doing several things to save the sharks in Florida like, making strict laws and enforcing them, huge fine, increasing the tax on the shrimps and the seafood companies as well as more research programs.

These sharks mainly feed on other whales and if these white sharks get extinct which are at the top of food chain, then this could be devastating effect on the ocean’s ecosystem. Its the time of exigency to protect great white shark because the name of this species is listed in 2000 ICUN World Conservation Union Red list of threatened species (www.caske2000.org). Animals too have rights and this has to be realized especially in the light of the fact that human existence is a part and parcel of nature, which is the ultimate controlling force. Men may have gained independence to support themselves but ecology still demands a harmonious relation between the animal Kingdom and human existence to sustain its balance; Man does not have any right to perturb the ecosystem of animals. Slow Breeding of these white sharks is another reason besides hunting. “Female White Sharks appear to give birth only every other year. The annual reproduction rate therefore is only 2-6 pups per year, a very slow reproductive rate. Slow reproduction rates are why sharks are very vulnerable to over fishing.”(www.grayreef.noaa.gov). In the coastal areas of Florida, there was reduction in shark feeding due to increase of human population. People feared this practice would increase the accidents. A bill was also passed to prohibit this, but this was rejected by Florida Fish &Wildlife Conservation Commission because they felt the accidents due to inshore feeding was very rare.

Coastal areas are the reproduction habitat of Great white sharks and when they come to coastal areas to breed or in search of prey, humans for commercial target hunt these sharks and for sport fishing. For the commercial purpose these White sharks are kept in captivity to breed, this shows the avarice nature of humans. But this cannot be practiced in future because white sharks have to move freely to breathe and its nature in captivity is unpredictable.

“ In the United States, the majority of shark attacks are reported in Florida. The states of California and Hawaii” (www.prbo.org), where ocean recreation is also extremely popular, have long histories of fatal and non-fatal encounters with sharks. Most attacks occur in waters near shore, typically inside of a sand bar or between sandbars where sharks may be trapped at low tide. Beaches with steep drop offs are also common attack sites. Fish tend to congregate in these areas, which attracts sharks. Seal and sea lion rookeries also attract sharks, such as the White, which feed upon the new-borns and individuals concentrated in one area. Shark attacks on humans appear to result from two basic circumstances: aggression or feeding. The behavior of sharks is poorly understood, but it is believed that during periods of breeding or, more aggressive actions may be displayed and attacks may be more prevalent. Sharks may also attack when a possible threat to their own lives is perceived. Although highly adapted, sharks may mistake humans for other sources of prey. Splashing bathers may create circumstances somewhat like splashing, schooling fish. When viewed from below, “the image of a human on a surf or boogie board may match the silhouette of a seal, sea lion, or sea turtle. In water that is murky, the possibility of such a mistaken identity increases”(www.sharkfoundation.com).

These great white sharks have a unique way of catching there prey, “Sharks count on the element of surprise as they hunt” (www.prob.org). It goes to the bottom of the sea and look for shapes of seal or sea lion, when they see such shape it moves towards it with great speed and injures its prey with its sharp teethes and allows it to bleed to death and swallows it and it can remain for many days with one large prey Sharks have one of the most highly developed senses of any creature. Their primary sense is the ability to smell. The nostrils can smell a drop of blood in 100 liters (25 gallons) of water. Their next important sense is the ability to detect electric charges. They can pick up electrical charges as small as 0.005 microvolt (www.sharkfondation.com). The electrical field generated by a beating heart or gill action can detect the prey.
Fish in hiding can also be detected this way (www.caske.org). In the baby white shark preys on small fish, shrimps, which helps in maintaining the ecosystem, and by doing so it keeps a check on the population of fish, etc.

The change in behavioral patterns like nesting, migration, food habits are all exemplification of the animal’s unease with their surroundings, altered largely due to man. It is the responsibility of the human race to respect the rights of animals, because man himself is an animal blessed with reasoning powers. His role is to modify nature for improvements, not for personal gains. I believe animals too have the right not to be interfered with, right not to be killed, right to natural habitat and right to be protected against extinction. In recent past, many organizations are coming up with new ideas to protect white sharks. The World Wildlife Foundation is funding work to protect the Great White Shark and other marine wildlife. The project will investigate its distribution and draw up a map of areas important to its survival WWF will then assess the conservation status and management of these areas so we can lobby governments to provide vital protection for the Great White and other marine wildlife “The white shark was protected in Californian waters in 1994, banning commercial and recreational fishing of the species” (www.wwf.org). Florida soon followed suit and, in 1997” (www.wwf.org), hunting was banned throughout Eastern coastal waters and the Gulf of Mexico. In 2004 the white shark was listed under endangered species. This means that a permit is needed to trade in its parts. The new Fishery Management Plan continues the prohibition on the landing and sale of great white throughout its ranges in U.S waters of the Atlantic Ocean and adjacent seas (www.wwf.org). I believe that the humans are involved in every thing bad or dangerous that touches our environment. The people’s greed will lead us to cut the forest to get wood, burn the oil to have gas, catch shrimp to export it and have money.

According to (G.T.Miller, 1994) the environment is like a circle, and everything inside this circle has a connection with the others. The shark is very important to our environment balance, and we should save it, as well as save the shrimps, witch is the sharks food. Sharks become more important to clean up our seas from sick fishes. These people who are killing the shark to use their fins and dumping their waste in the oceans must be stop, we have to save the sharks in Florida by, making strict laws and enforcing them, educate the people throw the TV and the radio, creating huge fine against the hunters and the commercial user. And as the shrimp become our food in staid of the shark food, which is, cost us more sharks attack, we have to increase the taxes on the seafood companies as well as the price of the shrimp in the market.

Finally, I would like to remind those people about the important scenario, which the shark is playing it in our environmental balance. And it should be more researching programs to avoid any more problems in our environment. And finally support from every body that are involved in this subject or not, because this is our planet and we should save it.

Abstract

Sooner or later, people will face huge environmental crisis. Sharks as many species and planet threatened by the greed of humans behavior around the world. People are hunting the sharks to use their fins to prepare shark soup, and you can imagine the number of the people that eating the soup every day! We have to have a strict law and special programs to help the people to understand this problem. Moreover, as long as we save the shark, we are helping our seas balance and the oceans ecosystem because sharks in the top of this chain system. So lets work together and educate our selves to have better life and better environment.

Bobcat

General information about bobcats
Size: Adult males average 25 pounds, while adult females average 15.
Home range: Adult males occupy a 36-square mile territory, while adult females live in a 12-square-mile area.
Breeding: Two to four kittens are born in dens in caves, hollow trees or barns. Their mother rears kittens. Male kittens between the ages of 1 and 2 venture off to stake out his own territories.
Diet: Bobcats mainly hunt mice, vole’s squirrels, rabbits and entrails left by deer hunters.
Life expectancy: Up to 12 years, although under optimal conditions, bobcats could live 15 to 20 years.

Bobcats were found in Illinois in 1800. Hunting them and the change in their habitat decreased their populations. They have been put on the threatened list since 1971. According to hunter’s reports in 1990, the bobcat population increased. Bobcats are usually quiet but can make low growls or high-pitched screams. Squalls, howls, meows, and yowls are sometimes heard during the mating season, when they tend to be more vocal than at other times of the year. Captive bobcats have been known to purr. The same is probably true for wild ones.
The good thing about the bobcat living in Illinois, is that they are protected and no one can hunt them. Coyotes, domestic Dogs, Hawks, and Owls are usually the bobcat’s cause of death as well as car accident.
Bobcat and many other animals across the nation need our attention.
If we save the animal’s habitat, stop hunting them, and stop cutting the trees we can recover what the human being did to the environment. In 1999, bobcats were removed from Illinois' list of state threatened species because scientific studies confirmed their wide distribution and growing numbers.

Endangered sharks (summary response)

Endangered sharks
Summary
This article is about the threats that are facing the sharks in Florida and around the world. With many people putting the sharks as one of the most dangerous threats facing them in the water, however they were swimming, fishing or diving. In fact there are more than 300 shark spices facing real dangerous situation, and the most famous one is the great white shark. According to the author, all the sharks in the oceans facing mostly the same threats, but as the white shark very rare, all the information will be about it. Moreover the author was describing the decline in the white shark population as 20% less in the last 40 years. And the ratio of the white sharks to the other spices in 1960’s is 1-22 and to1-38 in 1970’s and 1-651 in 1980’s. However what causes these declines are many reasons, but for sure it’s not the commercial fisheries or the accidental situation, the main sources of recorded mortality seem to be sport fishing and souvenir trade. The high prices for teeth and jaws in the souvenir trade are thought to stimulate directed take of this spices.
Response

The sharks in the oceans, the animals in the world, the bird in the ski are facing the same threats but in a different ways. As a white shark became more and more important to the world we should know some more details about it. This shark is a widely distributed species of coastal and offshore shelves in temperate and
sub-tropical areas. It is thought to have local populations that show some evidence of migratory behavior. It is a large (5 m) marine predator, vilified for its occasional attacks on humans. It is thought to have a low reproductive rate, reaching sexual maturity at 9-10 years of age and producing between two and ten pups after a 12-month gestation period once every two to three years. The species is relatively long-lived. The Great White Shark is uncommon compared to other sharks and evidence from protective beach netting in Florida, California and South Africa.
Further to the shark threats, Scientists who study sharks have been alarmed for years over the effects such exploitations have on shark populations. They warn of the possible effect depleted shark populations may have on ocean life. Decrease the number of sharks, whose feeding habits help to keep populations of other fish in check, and you offset the balance of aquatic life. "Sharks help control disease in fish populations," explains shark expert Samuel Gruber of the University of Miami. "They play an important role in the evolution of prey species, taking the sick and unhealthy fish, leaving the more fit to breed."

Consequently, sharks part like any other rare animals (tiger, lion,crocodile...etc).And many fisher and hunters searching for them, to sell them as a souvenir to many collectors in the world. Therefore, I would like to remind those people to the important scenario, which the shark is playing it in our environment balance. And it should be more researching programs to avoid any more problems in our environment. And finally support from every body that involve in this subject or not, because this is our planet and we should save it.

Sharks attack

Sharks are many different kinds, sizes and weights. But when we can know if this shark is dangers or not, or how danger is he? Sharks are so different, like we can’t compare the white shark with the bonnet head shark, because each one has attitude and targets. From 350 or so shark species, 80% are unable to hurt people because it’s less than 1.6 meter. the rest of them attack people or fishers or divers fore examples like, protecting their area or accidental or sometimes associated with feeding behavior. Furthermore, types of attack are different as well as kind of sharks are. And to know about these attacks, we will name some of it. First, hit and run, bump and bite and sneak attack. (www.mote.org).
It’s another world inside the darkness of the ocean, this blue world has only one king, and this king is the shark. That’s why it’s difficult to swim, without thinking about this threat, or feeling that something is watching you. People usually enjoy going to the beach, or go diving, snorkeling or fishing. But definitely those people must take care, and learn the safety information’s like check your Ocean Conditions at your local beach, for ocean safety conditions. Swim near a lifeguard. Avoid swimming in the evening or night when there is no lifeguard on duty. Sharks normally feed at this time. Avoid swimming alone. Sharks are attracted to bait fish. In Florida the baitfish typically have off white or yellow bellies and shiny scales. Avoid swimming when the ocean visibility is poor. Look for signs of baitfish. This is indicated by groups of small fish normally gathering together in a group. Baitfish can appear like a dark moving cloud in the water.
Look for signs of large fish in the water. This could indicate sharks. Look for birds,
Birds often eat remains of fish or live baitfish. (www.sharksurvivor.com).
Otherwise, people are hunting sharks around the world, so the simple question is, who’s the victim, the sharks or the people. And I thing that the shark is the victim for many reason, first we went to the shark’s home, and we start sharing the fish with it, and finally we have to remember the damage we made when we spreading out the oils field around the oceans.
Basically, it is as important for man to recognize and respect the importance of sharks in our environment, as it is any other living species on this planet. Sharks are important as an indicator species which can help us to better manage irreplaceable natural resources on which we all depend. Sharks also play an important role to keep other species in check and therefore, maintain a critical balance within the fragile ocean environment. Immune to most all disease, including cancer... sharks are the subject of intensive medical research that could some day benefit man.
And also, sharks help to maintain a healthy marine fisheries environment by mostly preying on the sick, injured, weak or diseased. And finally, despite a mostly undeserved reputation as "man-eaters", sharks are indeed one of the most beautiful, fascinating and powerful creatures on this planet. Ultimately, their preservation will ensure ours... and likewise, their destruction will ensure the eventual destruction of our ocean's on which all mankind depends.

Meet the Fockers

Meet the fockers

Having given permission to male nurse Greg Focker (Stiller) to wed his daughter (Polo), ex-CIA man Jack Byrnes (De Niro) and his wife (Danner) travel to Detroit to "meet the parents", who this time around are Mr. and Mrs. Focker (Hoffman and Streisand), who are as different from them as can be. This movie is like what happened when I’ve got married.
It’s funny to watch a movie talking exactly about your real life. (Except the sex things).

Ban somking in illinos's bar and restaurant

152,000$ that what SIU spending every year to clean the ashtrays and fans around the university, and if u look to this number you can say (what a big number!!) actually siu can spend such as this number to developing the university.
Ban smoking in Carbondale (ill) is a very good movement to protect our self and our children from the risk of smiling smoke of cigarette, but the problem are they going to vote for it in Carbondale or not? Bar owners are surly against ban smoking cause they thing it going to kill their business, but I don't thing that will happened because all restaurants and bars will be the same (smoking free).

Two week ago I spoke with waiters in one restaurant about this, and what happened is;

-Do you thing ban smoking is good or bad and why?
-She was like I don't like smoke any way but, I thing this will kill our business.

Tiger in dnger

"Tigers Fossils are known from the late Pliocene/early Pleistocene of southeastern Asia. A small primitive tiger was living in North China during the early Pleistocene. between 1.3 and 2.1 million years ago, tigers were living in Java...from about two million years ago, tigers spread from their evolutionary centre in eastern Asia in two directions. tigers moved through the Central Asian woodlands to the west and southwest gave rise to the Caspian tigers”. (Hemmer, 1987). But now you can find them in India, China, Nepal and Indonesia. According to the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) the numbers of tigers are decreasing sharply and there are not more than (5700-7500) (www.worldwildlife.com) left in the entire world.

The cause of this has many reasons, like the huge expansion in the human
population, the specialized tiger hunters, business development in tiger habitats,
culture and religious (some people believe that eating tiger's heart giving them
strength and power) beliefs which a few people use tiger's part for medicinal reasons
people and government must do something about this, like, educate the tiger's buyers,
support any animal organization like WWF, and provide special programs on the TV and radio to express how this special animal is facing a really big danger. Also laws should be made and strictly enforced to protect the tiger's future generations, and we could increase a fine on people who are trading tiger's part.

Tiger parts are very expensive, but people still collect them around the world, like the skins, bones. More than 200 kg were exported to South Korea alone in 1993 according to WWF (www.worldwildlife.com) and the skeleton. Much of the slaughtered tiger is destined for the Chinese medicine market. Aside from being used as medicine, tiger parts like claws and bones are use for curiosity. Even the tiger penis is also used as an aphrodisiac, and many people have tigers as decoration in their houses and others keep them as pets. that's why poor hunters (people in the small village who's they haven't finished their education and without job) are trying to find any way to hunt this animal, and make money from each part of it, and I don't think there is an easy way to stop them, because they have a really strong world wide network around the world, like (Hong Kong, Japan and Taiwan), with transit point country like Singapore.

Moreover if we looked to the weak law we will find it without any evidence,
because the tiger poachers bring nothing that can be used as an evidence, so they really
know what they are doing. In the country like Indonesia the maximum punishment for
the tiger poacher is 5 years in prison and $25,000 as fine, I think that is one of the ways to stop poaching tigers and with more patrols in tiger habitat, it would be more controlled. In all over East Asia, it's too easy to buy what ever you want from shops, like, food, clothes, and tiger's part! So the government must do something about this, like, close the shops, fine the owners, or even prison is good solution.

Although The buyer too, every county must have advertisements all over the place, like, in the airport, shopping center, zoo and the street, to explain and express how and why the tiger's life is in danger. In this way, I think we will give both citizens and tourists an idea, about tiger life, and how it is facing a big problem. Supporting the animal organization like WWF or volunteer are good idea for the people who like helping animals around the world, especially when such as (WWF) have branches around the world, they working around the world to protect endangered wildlife, preserve wild lands and address global threats and challenges. although this work would not be possible if it weren't for the dedicated support of our members and conservation partners. “ There are a number of ways that you can join WWF in its fight to save a living planet. Learn more about these opportunities and the benefits that come with your promise to protection. With WWF you can become a force for nature”(www.worldwildlife.com).

The second problem facing tiger life is losing habitat. As forest space is reduced, the number of animals left in the forest is reduced, as a result tigers begin to eat the farm animals of villagers who live near them. Sometimes tigers even attack humans. People sometimes kill the tigers in order to protect themselves and their farm animal, aside from this problem is the human population moves to the forest areas, so because of this tigers have very small chance to meet each other so the reproduction was decreased.
So after all this, do you think it's too late, or to you think is there are chances
of breeding the tiger again? For the first time in six years there is evidence of breeding tigers in Vietnam, providing new hope for their future in that country (www.panda.org).

Surveys conducted by WWF and Vietnam's Forest Protection Department between January and June 2004 found two sets of tiger tracks in the Truong Son mountain region, one set belonging to a mother and cub. Tigers are believed to exist in low densities in Vietnam, but this is the first evidence of breeding in recent years. Finding evidence of a cub is great news and proof that Vietnam has a breeding population of tigers, but it's key that we protect not just the tigers, but also their habitat and the species they prey on to ensure that the population grows (www.nfwf.org).

So far all the zoos in the world are focusing on the quantity, and they should focus on the quality, that's why Zoo arks build genetic reservoirs of endangered species to insure against their extinction. Zoos must also balance the needs of all species, not just tigers. More exhibits for tigers mean fewer for jaguars or clouded leopards. Zoos must work together in order to efficiently manage as many endangered species as possible. To protect genetically healthy captive populations, zoos must work together to manage all of the individuals of a specific species as one large interbreeding population within their county or region of the world. The Zoo Ark includes the entire world of zoos, not just zoos in one country or region, like what happened in Thailand's zoo when bird flu hit the 83 tigers and killed 32 of them, however without the information network between the zoo's maybe we will have been facing bigger number of dead tiger's in all of Asia (www.bigcatrescue.org)

Although the tiger is a beautiful animal. But that is not the reason why we are asking for it to be saved. When we save the tiger, we save the forest it lives in and, in turn, our water sources. For tigers to live, we have to make sure that deer and all other animals that the tiger eats also survive. This can only be done by protecting the trees, grasses and plants that these animals eat. In this way, the whole forest together with insects, birds and animals gets saved!

Therefore, we have to start doing something, tigers and their 8 species are in real danger, there are less than 8000 tigers left in the entire world, this tiger that is known for more than 2 million yeas” (www.worldwildlife.com). ago facing many threats, like, the huge expansion in the human population, and losses in habitat. However, hunting is for pleasure, religious, or medical reasons. We must do something about all that, we have to stop the hunters, especially the hunters who lives in small villages around Asia, because they are poor and without any education, they are killing these tigers either to protect themselves from such adangerous animals, or by selling tiger's parts to China's market to have money in order to feed their hungry children. Poaching tiger's habitat is also pushing tigers to live separate, and that effecting tiger's breeding, aside of this problem when peoples are poaching tiger's habitat, tigers will find people's animal and people them selves a good target as a food, so tigers start attacking them and facing hunters with guns.

Supporting any animal organization such as WWF (www.worldwildlife.com), by money and suggestions are the beginning to help tigers, and the way to be an active member in one of these organizations is not so difficult, you only have to visit their web site to have full information. Although the government must protect any endanger species, especially tigers, golden monkeys and dolphins by protecting the habitat, and punish and fine hunters, and by special programs to educate the people, however, hunters, or regular people, and use TV and radio for that. Finally I believe that the way is not difficult, but all of us must start helping these animals, and believe it or not you will find many way to help, if you decide, no matter if you are a Student, Doctor, Teacher or Farmer.
